It is always interesting to visit the original sites of the Castles Shipbreaking companies over the years and to establish if they still exist in modern day London.
The above photograph of the Baltic Wharf site was taken in September 2014 and shows clearly the wharf frontage from a viewpoint on Vauxhall Bridge. The area on the immediate left of the picture was the site of Bridge Wharf, owned by the Freeman family until acquired by Henry Castle & Sons in the 1870s. The section starting from the end of the scaffolding and as far as the first group of trees was the original Baltic Wharf site, acquired in 1845 by Henry Castle as sole proprietor.
