Many artefacts were manufactured from the wood and metal taken from the ships when they were broken up at Castles Yards and sold as mementoes to anyone interested in a souvenir of a particular ship of the line.
The weighing scales shown above were made from wood and gun metal from HMS Defiance broken up at Plymouth during the early 1930s. The scales were used daily in the company offices at Cattedown Plymouth until 1979, a. remarkable testament to their accuracy and durability.
